Job Description for Business Manager

University United Methodist Church, Lake Charles

Full-time (35-40 hours per week)

Reports to: Senior Pastor for all aspects of the job. 

Effective Start Date:  end of August 2019, or earlier for training purposes

JOB SUMMARY:  The Business Manager will provide leadership and oversight for the financial stewardship, care of church facilities/equipment, and oversight of maintenance and information technology at University United Methodist Church.


Financial Oversight

1.  Payroll for Church staff, handling reimbursements, monitoring budget line items and offering quarterly and annual contribution statements to membership.

2.  Attend Church Leadership meetings and provide leaders with budget information, resourcing, keeping all records and employee files in database.

3.  Oversee the counting of offerings, making deposits on behalf of the church.

4.  Prepare and send statistical reports to Louisiana Conference Office as requested.

Facilities Oversight

5.  Manage the work of our custodian and Sunday morning hostess in the work of weekly cleaning and preventative maintenance.

6.  Function as liaison to Trustees and other leadership teams when repairs or renovations need to be made, or when the custodian cannot fix.

7.  Maintain security and technology systems, being first call on any issues that arise.  

8.  Assures effective safety and security procedures and policies are in place.


1.  Participation in regular bi-weekly staff meetings and Leadership Board meetings.

2.  Occasional training and continuing education for job related responsibilities will be encouraged and funded.

3.  Sunday will not be deemed a work day, but must be on call to triage issues related to building/financial emergencies leading up to and during morning worship.


Spiritual Leadership:  Must be in agreement with the United Methodist Church’s statement of faith and and live according to his/her Christian commitment. Involvement in other ministry tasks and interests will be encouraged as time and job responsibilities allow.

Interpersonal Skills:  Good listening skills, tact and consensus building skills.  Patience and perseverance in training volunteers, seeking always to involve members in ministry and discipleship rather than doing it all by oneself.

Management Skills:  Delegates, empowers, and holds others accountable.  Marshals resources (people, funding, material, support) to get things done for the sake of the church’s vital ministry.

Aesthetic Awareness:  Possesses a natural orientation towards cleanliness and orderliness of space; appreciates the value of and need for sacred space and knows how to physically tend to it.

Attention to Detail:  Keeps the larger picture of the church’s ministry in mind while attending to the smallest of details.  Takes initiative on following up on missing or out of balance items, resolving unanswered questions needed to address a problem.

This job description may be amended at any time at the recommendations of the Senior Pastor with Approval of the Leadership Council.  All changes will be communicated in writing prior to implementation.
